The Earth-month 2019
Spadefoot Challenge

Traditionally Earth Day is April 22nd. And we know that every day should be Earth Day. But we at Spadefoot Nursery want to take this opportunity to challenge you to up your efforts during the month of April, 2019, to make your own corner of the planet safer and more hospitable for wildlife. So we are challenging you to follow Tucson Audubon’s Habitat at Home guidelines (along with the suggestions we will be posting throughout the month).

Habitat at Home is a self-guided educational program that will help you to learn about the things we do that harm wildlife, and the things we do that help wildlife. The program comes with an educational packet and a sign for your yard.

It costs $35 for members, $45 for non-members (one-time registration fee). We recommend becoming a Tucson Audubon Society member!

We chose this program because though it was formed by a bird-focussed conservation organization, the program also encourages the use of native plants, water conservation, and the guidelines are helpful to all wildlife. Plus, we love Tucson Audubon Society!

Additionally, we will also be publishing additional plant lists and recommendations, posted on our website blog and on our social media.

Go here to see an outline of the goals (there are levels). Don’t worry if you can’t do it all and reach the highest level. The idea is to improve your space. Not everyone has the resources or even permission to alter their landscapes in all the ways recommended. But the more we all do, the better. We at Spadefoot will be working to improve our own space. No matter how long you’ve been wildlife gardening, there are always improvements that can be made, and we are always learning about the wildlife all around us.

Let us know at Spadefoot that you are doing this challenge: when you accomplish some of the goals, post on social media and tag us! Also use the hashtag #TucsonEarthDay2019

If you have any questions or need recommendations, we are here to help. Message us on social media, email us, or come visit us at one of our plant sales!
